Philippe Bernand, CEO of Aéroports de Lyon, Alain Loyer, Chairman and Managing Director of GFC Construction and Graham Stirk, lead architect and Partner at Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, have laid the first stone of the future Terminal 1 at Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport in the presence of the City’s Mayor and other local and regional dignitaries.
Designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, the new €180 million terminal will double the existing surface area to 70,000m² and enable Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport to welcome an additional 15 million passengers by 2020. With a top capacity of 10 million passengers, the building fulfils the standards of High Environmental Quality and meets four key objectives for the airport focused on quality of service, increasing competitiveness through operational efficiency, developing non-aeronautical revenue and increasing airline capacity.
The layout of the exterior landscaped spaces includes a pedestrian esplanade and transport infrastructure. Built as an extension to the existing Terminal 1, it will connect via an underground passage to the separate Terminal 3, which has been operational since November 2011.
