NEO Bankside

In response to statements made by the Architects 4 Social Housing group, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners would like to comment as follows:

The brownfield development site for NEO Bankside was previously a collection of single storey warehouse units which filled the site and did not allow for any pedestrian permeability or offer any public amenity.

NEO Bankside was designed as a series of buildings that could accommodate any mix of tenure, to be finally agreed with Southwark Council during the planning process. The proposals opened up the site providing a series of public, permeable landscaped gardens connecting Southwark Street to the River Thames and Tate Modern.

The approved scheme provided a percentage of affordable accommodation onsite and the remainder offsite within the borough, in line with Southwark Council’s wishes.

During construction further negotiations were undertaken between Southwark Council and the Native Land/Grosvenor Estates Joint Venture, which we were not party to. This resulted in a number of high quality affordable housing developments designed and executed by other architects. These were delivered off site but directly funded by NEO Bankside.

Abbey Street, Alice Street, Long Lane, Lorrimore Road, Old Kent Road, Stevens Street
