Details of Maggies Centre and Protos Winery

The design for the Maggie’s Centre, Hammersmith has today (21 May 2009) received an RIBA London award, as well as 'London Project of the Year'. The judges said “Rogers, Stirk Harbour + Partners have worked poetry at the Maggie's Centre. Their quietly confident building is truly a haven for those who have been diagnosed with cancer. Their achievement is in having created a completely informal, home-like sanctuary to help patients learn to live - or die - with cancer, beautifully.”

Bodegas Protos in Spain was acknowledged with an RIBA European Award.

Sunand Prasad said “These awards, which are judged on a regional basis, reflect and reward the good things that are going on all across the UK."

The buildings were judged in the first instance by shortlisting panels in each region, who visited schemes individually and met to produce a list of buildings to be then visited by the region's jury. Each regional jury was made up of a regional representative, a lay assessor from various disciplines and the jury chair, who is a nationally-renowned architect and chairs the shortlisting panel. Juries visited shortlisted projects, talked to clients and users and assessed design excellence irrespective of style, size or complexity. Each RIBA Award-winning project is presented with a special plaque.

The RIBA Stirling Prize shortlist will be drawn from the 103 RIBA Award winners. The RIBA Stirling Prize is awarded to the architects of the building that has made the greatest contribution to British architecture in the past year.  The prize will be presented at Old Billingsgate, London on Saturday 17 October 2009 and broadcast live on
Channel 4.
