Competition computer rendering of interior of St Lawrence Market North

Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners – together with Adamson Associates Architects – has won a major international design competition for the St Lawrence Market North Building in Toronto, Canada’s largest city.

The design is a five-storey structure that creates an open, indoor marketplace whilst providing strong links with the other buildings forming the St Lawrence Market Complex. The design includes three floors above the market space for court rooms and administrative offices for the Toronto Court Services.  The Complex has served as Toronto’s social centre and key marketplace for more than 200 years. However, increased demands in recent years have resulted in a strategy to redevelop the North Market, and the new building will greatly enhance the opportunities which the Complex can offer as well as creating a new civic heart for the St Lawrence area.

RSHP and Adamson have considerable experience of collaborating on projects in the USA over the past decade and the team was selected from an original field of 30 teams to work on this scheme.  The new North Market building is expected to be completed and operating in 2014.
