The Leadenhall Building
This speculative development for The British Land Company arose as a result of a limited competition in 2001, in which competitors were asked to explore the development potential of a site at 122 Leadenhall Street in the City of London. The site is currently occupied by a 12-storey office building built in the 1960s which will be demolished to make way for the new building. A number of historic buildings in the immediate vicinity of Leadenhall Street needed to be taken into consideration, including a Grade II listed building designed by Edwin Lutyens and two Grade I listed churches, St Helen's Bishopsgate and St Andrew Undershaft which front on to adjacent open space. In addition, the view of St Paul's Cathedral from Fleet Street was to be preserved in compliance with the City Council's Strategic Views Policy, designed to prevent development from further impairing important views of unique historic buildings.
